Fall TV Preview

With Fall Programming beginning this week and new shows continuing to begin through October, I thought I would share which shows get the official Sam Long seal of approval. I will begin with the returning shows I will be sure to watch and follow it up with some new shows that contain some potential.

Monk – If you have not seen an episode, you have not seen Tony Shalhoub at his finest. He was great in Wings. He is even better in Monk.
Psych – not great, but entertaining enough to watch.
Burn Notice – I don’t know how long they can keep this show going (plot wise), but so far I am hooked.
Chuck – Funny, clever, interesting. In addition, we get to see a Jewelish (the singer) eye candy.
Heroes – Riveting. That’s all I can say about it.
Life – If you didn’t see the first season, download it and check it out. The lead actor has great stage presence and the plot progress keeps me coming back each week.
The Office – We all know how good this show is.
Lost – We all know how good this show is.
House - We all know how good this show is.

Now, my time and interest are limited, so there are some new shows I plan on giving a try. However I will have to be really impressed in order to devote my limited time to them. (Descriptions are from the network websites):

Crusoe: Based on the tale of Robinson Crusoe, Crusoe will brave the elements in a contemporary tale of love, friendship and self discovery.
2-Hour Series Premiere, Friday, October 17th 8/7c
My Own Worst Enemy: Explores the duality of a man who is pitted against himself and raises the question: who can you trust when you can't trust yourself?
Series Premiere, Monday, October 13th, 10/9c
The Mentalist: Simon Baker stars as Patrick Jane, a detective and independent consultant with the California Bureau of Investigation (CBI) who has a remarkable track record for solving serious crimes by using his razor sharp skills of observation.
Fringe: From J.J. Abrams ("Lost"), Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, the team behind comes a new series that will thrill, terrify and explore the blurring line between the possible and the impossible.

Observations – most of the shows are from USA or NBC. FOX, ABC and CBS have a lot of crappy reality shows that seem to be taking precedence over quality dramas and comedies.

So, what are you looking forward to seeing in the fall programming?
Which show do you think I am an idiot for watching?

The four shows you highlighted to try this fall are the same four I was looking at. Watched Fringe last night... a little too graphic in places for me, otherwise I would be all over it. I just don't think I'm going to be able to handle it though. Estoy un wuss.

Shows on my list that aren't on yours: Eli Stone, Boston Legal, Terminator Sarah Connor, and if it ever gets back on the air, Friday Night Lights. FNL is one of the best dramas I've ever seen, but if you didn't enjoy the shaky "real life" camera work of the movie, you won't like the TV show either.

I gave all of your shows (except for FNL) a try. They are okay, just not at the level for me to commit. Maybe down the road when all TV goes to reality (i.e. next writers strike) I will download the seasons and watch.

I watched the replay of the Fringe premiere last night. It was like the X Files on steroids. Must see.

Get over Boston Legal, Tom. The Terminator i've given into. It's okay.

FNL was really really boring to me. Like a Smallville with no Superman. Incredibly predictable. Dawson's Creek for the 2000's.

I don't know when Tom got so squeemish. He has the intestinal fortitude of a bulemic high school girl. It wasn't any more graphic than the XFILES was. It is TV-14 so I can see why it was a little too much for his prepubescent tummy. You have to take into account that this is coming from the same guy who has the Desperate Housewives seasons on DVD. Another outburst like that Tom, and I'm revoking your MAN card.

I haven't seen the previews for the Mentalist. but form the description, I can't see what makes it different from 65% of network dramas.

I'd like to see one with no cops, lawyers or doctors, please.

The mentalist is a lot like the the show Psych, only not funny. The dude is a super genius (like psych) who uses his uncanny mind to figure things out impossibly. It's like Sherlock Holmes for the Post-moderns

Brandon Caroland said...

Oh, but you can't watch Psych.

Sam said...

Why can't I watch Psych? I saw that mentalist was just like Psych but without the quirky humor.

Austin Long said...

i may watch fringe only because it comes after house.

speaking of house, i wonder if the mentalist will be a house-like. genius, rebel, gets a lot wrong before he gets it right.

tom, if brandon takes away your man card, you can have mine.

Brandon Caroland said...

Shannon can't watch Psych. You have cable. He does not.

Sam said...

I don't have cable either Brandon, but I still watch the USA shows and the ones that come on before the kids bed time. How you ask? I do however have the internet and "Bit Torrent" - a nasty combination.

Brandon Caroland said...

If by nasty, you mean illegal, then I agree. You copyright infringer, you! You are a thief. A fine example you set for your youth group. Living above reproach and all. I think I get that now. Above reproach doesn't mean you are righteous, it just means that you are superior to those making the claims. Very nice.

First, it is of never-ending amusement to me that my "best friend" saves his most scathing criticism for me. Not in private, which is not only acceptable but welcomed, but more often in full public view. Insecurity on full display.

Second, my Desperate Housewives appreciation was actually spawned by the author of this post. And he was absolutely right... while I'm now about 2 seasons behind, it's a great show about personal and spiritual struggles in yuppie America.

Brandon - The downloading is still somewhat of a gray area. But, you have given me fodder for my next post.

Tom - the first season was good commentary. After that it has just turned into impossibly contrived plot lines.

IT's copyright infringement, Sam. Whether you acknowledge that law or not hinges on your need to acknowledge any law at all. It hinges on the spirit of that law. Cable shows are paid for by cable subscribers and corporate sponsors. Cable subscribers have no legal right to distribute the intellectual property of cable shows and therefore downloading those illegally copied shows is copyright infringement, since you did not purchase a cable subscription. The same goes for movies and music. It's like watching those bootleg movies that you can buy downtown. It's all the same.
